Holidays in Poitou-Charentes: a stay between the sea and countryside

Situated on the Atlantic coast, the Poitou-Charentes region has a rich historical heritage, with remains from the Roman times, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The region is divided into four departments: Deux-Sevres, Charente, Vienne and Charente-Maritime

Book a holiday rental in Poitou-Charentes and tour its villages, each more authentic than the next, and its towns full of art and history. In the town of Niort, several sites are worth a visit: the Donjon museum (located in a former prison), the Coudray-Salbart castle and the Saint-Andre church. Then head to the medieval village of Parthenay to visit its Cordeliers chapel. The town of Bressuire is home to the majestic remains of the Chateau de l'Ebaupinay and the Chateau de la Pastelliere. In Thouars, city of art and history, you can visit the castle of the Dukes of La Tremoille and the Henri Barre museum.

Then discover the Charente and the beautiful town of Angouleme, with its Comic Strip Museum. As for the city of Brigueuil, it is the perfect place to enjoy beautiful walks in the middle of nature, towards the mound of Frochet or the Dolmen of Rouffignac. Then go and taste a cognac in the town of Cognac.

You must also absolutely visit Poitiers, in the Vienne department. Its Saint Peter's Cathedral, Saint John's Baptistery and Courthouse are well worth a detour! Not far away, the town of Montmorillon is home to the Gallo-Roman remains of Mazamas, while Romagna boasts the castle of Sommieres-du-Clain.

As for the Charente-Maritime, it will leave you starry-eyed with the aquarium and the port of La Rochelle, the Royal Corderie of Rochefort and the oyster-farming site of Saint-Pierre-d'Oleron.

A wide range of activities are available from your holiday rental in Poitou-Charentes

The question is not what you will be able to do during your holidays in Poitou-Charentes, but when you will come back to have time to do everything! Whether you like thrills, lazing by the ocean or historic buildings, the region is full of activities of all kinds. It also enjoys a very pleasant microclimate for those who want to tan on fine sand. Discover the Grande-Conche beach, set between limestone cliffs, the Boirie beach near Saint-Denis-d'Oleron or the Pigeonnier beach along the Cote d'Argent (silver coast).

Poitou-Charentes is also rich in several islands that dot its coastline. Visit the Ile de Re to discover its postcard landscapes, its salt marshes, its many birds and picturesque hiking trails. The Ile d'Oleron is also worth a visit: located in the Bay of Biscay, it is linked to the coast by a bridge and is home to forests, dunes, beaches and several fishing ports. Also take advantage of your holiday rental in Poitou-Charentes to visit the Chassiron Lighthouse, the island of Aix, Fort Louvois and Fort Boyard, of course.

Lastly, discover the wealth of Chatellerault with its Henri IV bridge, the Villesalem abbey next to Montmorillon, the Roman ruins of Herbord, the castle of Coudray-Salbart, the ruins of Les Bouchauds and the Oiron castle.

Before returning to your holiday rental in Poitou-Charentes, don't forget to stop off in Armagnac to taste the famous local beverage. Do you like oysters? Take a tour of the oyster farmers who will be delighted to let you taste their local produce.
